What Are PVCs? Understanding That "Skipped Beat" Feeling
Don’t let a fluttering heart leave you guessing. Schedule your comprehensive rhythm evaluation at Tri County Heart Institute today.

One of the most common reasons patients visit our offices in Leesburg and The Villages is the sensation of a “skipped heartbeat.” You might feel a sudden flip-flop in your chest, a forceful thump, or a brief pause that catches your breath. In most cases, what you are feeling is a PVC, or Premature Ventricular Contraction.

Despite the name, your heart isn’t actually skipping a beat. Instead, an extra electrical impulse starts in the lower chambers of the heart (the ventricles) before the next regular beat is scheduled to happen. This “early” beat is usually weaker, creating a pause as the heart resets, followed by a much stronger “thump” as the heart overfills with blood for the next beat.

As we discussed in our February post, “What Are Heart Palpitations—Really?”, these sensations are your heart’s way of asking for attention. While PVCs are frequently benign, they are often triggered by lifestyle factors such as stress, caffeine, or dehydration. However, when they become frequent or intense, they deserve a professional look to ensure your heart’s electrical “wiring” is functioning correctly.
