A clear look at the causes behind a slow heartbeat
By Shelbie H., Nurse Practitioner — Tri County Heart Institute, The Villages, FL
If you have been told your heart beats too slowly, or you suspect it, you probably want a straight explanation of why. Here it is, without the jargon.
I am Shelbie, a nurse practitioner with seven years in cardiology. Heart disease runs in my own family, so I take the “why” behind a diagnosis seriously, and I want you to understand yours.
What’s actually happening
Your heart beats because of a small electrical signal that travels across it in a precise pattern. Bradycardia is fundamentally an electrical problem: the signal fires too infrequently, or it cannot travel across the heart the way it should. When that happens, your heart can’t pump enough oxygen-rich blood to keep up with your body, which is why people feel tired, foggy, or dizzy.
Common Causes
A slow heartbeat can come from several directions. The most common include:
- The natural aging of the heart’s electrical system
- Scar tissue from a previous heart attack
- Sick sinus syndrome — the heart’s own natural pacemaker not working correctly
- Heart block — the signal from the upper to the lower chambers is irregular or blocked
- Certain illnesses, or some heart medications
- A condition you were born with (congenital heart disease)
Why the Cause Matters
The cause drives everything that comes next. Some slow heartbeats trace back to a treatable issue – an underactive thyroid, an electrolyte imbalance, or a medication that can be changed or re-dosed. Sort that out, and the rhythm may return to normal on its own. When the slowdown comes from actual damage or aging in the heart’s electrical system, restoring a steady rhythm may take more than medication. That is a conversation you will have with your cardiologist, based on your specific picture.
When to Get Checked
Don’t sit on it. If you are running low on energy, getting winded, or feeling dizzy or faint, those are exactly the symptoms we want to evaluate. Finding the cause is the whole point – and it is what lets us give you answers, not just tests.
